Johanna Jakobsdottir writes on behalf of Athena
We at Athena basketball club strongly condemn the Icelandic basketball association for not taking an active stance against sexual violence and harassment within in the basketball community in Iceland. We demand action.
The association has not tackled those issues proactively in the past and we are skeptical whether the association is capable of that. The association chose a convicted rapist to play for the national team and has kept quiet about incidents that have been brought to their attention. National team coaches who have been fired for sexually harassing players are rehired as youth national team coaches without warning to younger players and parents about their history.
It is about time to stop hiding behind awareness campaigns. It is time for action.
